TAFE students at play with new Digital Creation
The Digital Media Diploma students at TAFE NSW – Northern Sydney Institute have been busy at play, working on The Unbard Curse: Code Kala, a groundbreaking game played out in several strange and exciting realities over the internet, CD-ROM and in the real world.
The students have spent six months working on the game, which is due to be released in May this year. A first for the students, the class worked together to design the game which demonstrates cutting edge digital design.
Unlike other games, The Unbard Curse: Code Kala gives players clues via a range of sources; including sms’s and real places outside of the game.
“Players might have to call phone numbers, send SMS’s, or look for clues in real graveyards,” said IT Teacher David Bartolo.
“Entry to the game is via a video that leads players to a website, where the game begins to unfold.”
With production of the game about to get into full swing, students are beginning to acquire and create assets for the game.
“This is proving to be a fun and valuable experience for the students,” said David.
“They are able to combine different skills and study areas into a single project, forming into small project teams and working in different sections of the game.”
Throughout the Digital Media Diploma, students acquire and learn to apply a wide range of skills in the field Digital Media, including design, photography, video, audio, web, authoring and 2D & 3D animation.
The game marks the way forward for Digital Media at TAFE NSW – Northern Sydney Institute, as they continue to explore new areas of technology.
“Digital Media is such a rapidly expanding field,” said Head Teacher Chris Sumners.
“Our section needs to stay abreast of the rapidly changing environment, and so far we have managed to do so by incorporating new courses, and new techniques into what we do.”
