TAFE student wins Mercedes Benz Apprenticeship Award, twice
Local Avalon resident and TAFE NSW - Northern Sydney Institute (NSI), Northern Beaches student Tom Hudson, has not only finished his apprenticeship course 7 months early but also received first place in the NSW Mercedes-Benz apprenticeship awards for his outstanding and dedicated work for 2 years running.
Northern Sydney Institute works with Mercedes Dealerships to place students as pre-vocational apprentices (whilst still at high school) and ongoing apprentices during their study. Mercedes-Benz Australia Pacific offers an additional specialist four-year training program for apprentices and technicians.
Tom, based at McIntosh of Mosman, was due to graduate from his Certificate III in Automotive Mechanical course in November; however, due to the self-paced learning option offered by TAFE he was able to graduate in April.
According to Tom, TAFE taught him the industry fundamentals for his apprenticeship and Mercedes has provided specialist and product training.
“Northern Sydney Institute allowed me to complete the course at my own pace so I really concentrated on getting through the workload. I guess it was harder on the teachers who had to set extra exams and manage my learning process but they were incredibly supportive. I have picked up lots of tricks of the trade from teachers at TAFE,” said Tom.
Tom won first prize for the NSW 2005 and 2006 Mercedes-Benz Accelerated Apprentice Program as a first and second year apprentice. “I’m very proud to have won the award. In two years time I aim to be Mercedes-Benz Technician of the Year,” said Tom.
The 2007 Awards will be held in June and Tom stands a good chance of winning the award for a third time.
According to Paul McGregor, Head Teacher in Auto Mechanics at Northern Beaches College apprentices can start at TAFE NSW with or without their own apprenticeship placement.
“Some companies like Mercedes-Benz offer accelerated apprenticeship programs which are recognised by TAFE NSW. This enables the student to fast-track their course and in some cases finish their study early. Plus, to meet employers and trainees needs, study days can be varied to suit,” said Mr McGregor.
“There is a massive demand for apprentices in this industry at the moment with companies such as Mercedes-Benz looking for new recruits. Completion of the Auto Mechanics course at Northern Sydney Institute can provide a promising start to a career in this industry,” said Mr McGregor.
Tom Hudson is continuing his studies at Northern Beaches College for his Certificate II in Transport and Distribution (Maritime Operations).
