Horticulture in Australia is a $7 billion industry. It is extremely diverse and comprises fruit, vegetables, nuts, nursery, extractive crops, cut flowers and turf. A range of careers exist in the Horticulture industry. Total horticultural exports in 2004/05 were $817 million. It is the fastest growing industry in agriculture with 17,273 enterprises. Horticulture employs 64,000 people; this translates to 20 per cent of total employment in agriculture being within horticulture. Increasing demand for skilled professionals ensures that employment opportunities exist now and into the future for those with the right skills and qualifications. The industry currently has a strong focus on sustainability, sustainable water use, invasive plants, recycled organics and irrigation management.

Florists mainly work for small retail outlets. Many florists are self-employed with approximately 60 per cent of all people working in the industry work full-time. Job growth is expected to be moderate over the next 5 years. There has been an increase in the number of florists over the last ten years.

Gaining skills and qualifications in Horticulture

Ryde College is a specialist training centre horticulture and environmental management, with state-of-the-art facilities including computerised glasshouses, landscape design studios, a cricket pitch, golfing green, tennis court and a bowling green. Increasing industry demands ensure that employment opportunities exist now and into the future for those with the right mix of skills and qualifications. 

More recently, the Horticulture (Landscape) Certificate II has been introduced at Northern Beaches College. The Institute offers practical and innovative courses from basic skills, trade through to middle management and professional training. Recognition of Prior Learning and experience is available for students who are already employed in the industry and have attained various skill levels so that they can obtain advanced standing in the various courses and industry training programs.

Courses cater for those requiring introductory entry level skills through to high level skills leading to employment or further tertiary level courses. All of our trainers are experts in their field and are qualified industry professionals and experienced trainers.
